Conservation policies have had some success in the forests and wetlands of the United States and Western Europe - but globally the environmental picture looks bleak. Desertification is accelerating; rainforests are being cut down at an unbelievable rate. We wring our hands over global warming, but don't change our behavior. And many in developing countries think they have no choice but to accept the polluting industries that rich nations outlaw at home. |
