Large parts of our cities have become "places of fear and loathing" where illegal drugs is the biggest growth industry. We are installing metal detectors in the doorways of junior high schools to stop the influx of guns. We put more people in prison every year, and the U.S. is the only major industrial country who maintains capital punishment. We spend a great deal of money on law enforcement, and even more, nationally, on private security. Yet we don't feel safe... When people lack opportunity, many will turn to illegal or antisocial actions. Yet: if there were no crime, no violence, none at all - would everyone earn a livable wage, and find an affordable home? | |
